The AfCFTA Introduction

This research paper introduces the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) within the context of Africa's struggle to maximize globalization and diversify its exports. It compares a 'business-as-usual' scenario with the potential economic gains of full AfCFTA implementation by 2043, highlighting the continent's current over-reliance on primary goods and its vulnerability to external policies like the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.

• Africa currently underperforms in global trade, possessing 18.2% of the world's population but only approximately 2.9% of global GDP. In 2023, African exports accounted for only 2.2% of world exports, with a trade profile heavily skewed toward primary goods.
• African economies generally fail to add value to primary commodities, leading to a dependence on imports for processed goods. For instance, while Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire produce about 53% of global cocoa, they import chocolate from the UK and Switzerland.
• Projections for 2043 suggest that full implementation of the AfCFTA would increase Africa's share of world exports to 4.4% and raise GDP per capita to US$6,602. This represents a 6.5% increase in GDP per capita compared to the 'Current Path' forecast of US$6,197 and a world export share of 3.5%.
• The AfCFTA is expected to help African countries diversify export markets and mitigate the impact of the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which takes full effect in January 2026 and requires payments for embodied carbon emissions in certain carbon-intensive goods.
