Understanding Climate Risks Through an Intersectional Approach (iCRA)

The iCRA project (January 2025–December 2026) seeks to strengthen the evidence base for intersectional approaches to climate change adaptation. By piloting intersectional climate risk assessments (CRAs) in Nepal and South Africa, the project analyzes how overlapping systems of inequity—such as racism, ableism, and caste-based discrimination—influence vulnerability to climate hazards. The project utilizes knowledge co-production with partners serving marginalized groups to generate recommendations for policy-makers and practitioners.

• The iCRA project aims to address the gap between the recognized need for intersectional approaches in climate adaptation and the lack of clarity on how to apply them in practice, specifically by piloting intersectional climate risk assessments (CRAs) to analyze how systems of inequity influence exposure and vulnerability.
• In Nepal, the project's case study in the rural community of Mardhar (Mithila municipality, Terai region) examines the impacts of flooding and drought on individuals facing intersecting ageism and caste- and gender-based discrimination.
• In South Africa, the project's case study in the Elsies River neighbourhood of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality analyzes risks from extreme heat and drought for people experiencing intersecting ableism, racism, and discrimination against LGBTQI+ communities.
