Rethinking the design of our economies for low-carbon and equitable growth

The IISD Economic Law and Policy program provides technical support, data, and analysis to policy-makers and businesses to align public and private investment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program focuses on finance, trade, government procurement, and industrial policy, with specific emphasis on agricultural and mining investments in developing countries. Key initiatives include the Annual Forum of Developing Country Investment Negotiators and the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development, aimed at building the capacity of officials in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to negotiate sustainable treaties and contracts.

• The IISD Economic Law and Policy program focuses on economic policy areas essential for redirecting public and private investment, specifically finance, trade, government procurement, and industrial policy, with a particular emphasis on mining and agricultural investments in developing countries.
• To address the disadvantage poorer countries face during negotiations with wealthier nations and investors, the program provides capacity building for government officials through research, forums, and training to help them design sustainable policies and contracts.
• The program operates global platforms for stakeholders, including the Annual Forum of Developing Country Investment Negotiators, which has involved negotiators from more than 60 developing and emerging economies since 2007, and the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development.
