Rethinking the design of our economies for low-carbon and equitable growth

This fact sheet describes the Economic Law and Policy program of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), which provides technical support, legal advice, and global platforms to help governments and stakeholders design economic policies that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promote low-carbon, equitable growth.

• The IISD Economic Law and Policy program focuses on shifting public and private investment toward sustainable goals by targeting specific policy areas including industrial policy, trade, government procurement, and finance. The program places a particular emphasis on mining and agricultural investments in developing countries due to the urgent need for reform and the impact on sustainable development.
• To address the disadvantage poorer countries face when negotiating with investors and wealthier nations, IISD provides capacity building for government officials through research, forums, and training to help them create contracts, treaties, and policies that support sustainable and inclusive growth.
• IISD manages global platforms for stakeholders, including the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development and the Annual Forum of Developing Country Investment Negotiators, which has gathered treaty negotiators from more than 60 emerging and developing economies annually since 2007.
