GEO Resource Book

The GEO Resource Book is a training manual developed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) to build capacity for forward-looking, integrated environmental assessment (IEA) and reporting at sub-global levels. It provides a modular framework based on the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) approach to help practitioners produce policy-relevant information on the interactions between the natural environment and human society.

• The manual is structured into eight modules that guide users through the entire IEA lifecycle: from initial approach and process design to impact strategy, data monitoring, integrated analysis, scenario development, communication of results, and final monitoring and evaluation.
• The IEA process follows a structured seven-stage implementation timeline: Start-up (4–6 weeks), Institutional set-up (1–3 months), Scoping and design (2–4 weeks), Planning (4–6 weeks), Implementation (10–12 months), Communication of results and outreach (1–2 months), and Monitoring, evaluation and learning (1–2 months).
