The StateBL//SะSBB

This fact sheet describes the Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative within the Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier Conservation Area in Southern Africa. The initiative focuses on nature-based solutions for climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and community training across Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

• The Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier Conservation Area is located in Southern Africa across the Kavango and Zambezi River basins, encompassing 36 protected areas such as national parks, game reserves, forest reserves, community conservancies, and game/wildlife management areas.
• The Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative implements nature-based solutions to enhance biodiversity and ecosystems, targeting local communities and underrepresented groups including Indigenous communities and persons with disabilities. Specific activities include establishing native tree nurseries to restore forest cover, stabilizing water sources like wetlands and lagoons against drought, restocking native wildlife, and providing training in climate adaptation, financial management, and entrepreneurship.
• CAPA interventions are targeted at specific sites: the Cuando River basin within Luenge-Luiana National Park in southeast Angola; the Sioma Ngwezi and Mosi-Oa-Tunya ecosystems in southern Zambia; Bwabwata National Park in northeast Namibia; and community and communal areas around Hwange and Chizarira National Parks in Zimbabwe.
