Extreme temperatures Heat waves

The CAPA Initiative, funded by Global Affairs Canada, implements nature-based solutions (NbS) to protect biodiversity and strengthen climate resilience. In Belize, activities focus on reforestation in the Maya Forest Corridor and coral reef health in marine reserves. In Fiji, interventions include flood mitigation buffers and sustainable fisheries. In the Greater Virunga Landscape (Uganda), the project focuses on restoring agricultural lands and promoting climate-resilient livelihoods. In the Kavango–Zambezi Landscape (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Angola), efforts target forest restoration and the stabilization of wetlands and headwaters. Global-level support is provided by IISD through research, capacity strengthening, and gender-responsive approaches.

• The CAPA Initiative employs nature-based solutions (NbS) to address climate risks and biodiversity loss, targeting local communities, women's groups, and underrepresented populations through assessments of gender, biodiversity, and conflict contexts.
• Site-specific interventions vary by region: Belize focuses on reforestation and coral reef health; Fiji on flood mitigation and sustainable fisheries; Uganda (Greater Virunga Landscape) on restoring agricultural lands and tree nurseries; and the Kavango–Zambezi Landscape (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Angola) on restoring forest cover and stabilizing wetlands.
• IISD provides global-level support to the initiative through research, knowledge generation, strategic communications, and the development of gender-responsive approaches to the NbS project life cycle.
