Traditional Ecological Knowledge for Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in Fiji

This report, produced as part of the Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative, explores the role of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) in enhancing the adaptive capacity of vulnerable communities in Fiji, specifically regarding climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR).

• Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) serves as a sustainable and economical alternative to traditional 'grey infrastructure' like dams and seawalls for climate change adaptation.
• TEK contributes to disaster risk reduction (DRR) by providing established methods for predicting storms and floods, preserving food, issuing early warnings, and reducing the risks associated with landslides and wildfires.
• Traditional governance and the roles of chiefs within the iTaukei community are essential to cultural identity and will remain critical in responding to climate change.
