How Small Businesses Can Support Climate-Resilient Value Chains: Lessons from Uganda

This briefing discusses how domestic seed companies and small businesses in developing countries can enhance climate risk management (CRM) within agricultural value chains by investing in quality, climate-resilient seeds and complementary services.

• Small businesses in developing countries contribute to climate risk management (CRM) by creating new products and offering complementary services that mitigate the negative effects of climate change for their clients and suppliers, with domestic seed companies' investments in quality seeds serving as a primary example.
• To better support CRM, domestic seed companies should improve the distribution and quality control of climate-resilient products through partnerships and standards, increase awareness regarding the benefits of these seeds, and help stakeholders make more informed seed choices.
• Development practitioners can support climate-resilient value chains by assisting small businesses in accessing climate finance, building their capacity to integrate climate and weather information into decision-making, and improving supporting systems such as markets, information, and infrastructure.
