Sustainable Asset Valuation of Land Restoration in Sodo District, Southern Ethiopia

The report evaluates a 2,868-hectare assisted natural regeneration (ANR) project in Sodo Woreda, Ethiopia, finding that it provides direct economic benefits to farmers and delivers climate adaptation and mitigation services. The analysis demonstrates that ANR is an investment-worthy strategy for combating land degradation and enhancing rural resilience, particularly when located upland of cropland to reduce erosion.

• Assisted natural regeneration (ANR) generates economic value through job creation, the production of thatch grass and livestock fodder, carbon storage, and improved agricultural productivity. Its effectiveness is increased when situated upland of cropland, where it can mitigate land degradation and erosion in agricultural zones.
• A Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi) of a project covering 2,868 hectares in southern Ethiopia, which began in 2016, indicates that ANR is an effective and investment-worthy strategy for supporting rural livelihoods and increasing climate change resilience, adaptation, and mitigation.
• The economic attractiveness of nature-based infrastructure, such as ANR, is enhanced by positive externalities and indirect impacts.
