Sustainable Asset Valuation of Land Restoration in Sodo District, Southern Ethiopia

This report provides a Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi) of an assisted natural regeneration (ANR) project covering 2,868 hectares in Sodo Woreda, Ethiopia, demonstrating that land restoration provides direct economic benefits to farmers and climate services.

• Assisted natural regeneration (ANR) in Sodo Woreda generates direct economic benefits for farmers and provides services for climate mitigation and adaptation. Value is created through carbon storage, livestock fodder, thatch grass production, job creation, and improved agricultural productivity.
• The effectiveness of ANR is increased when implemented upland of cropland, as it can mitigate land degradation and erosion in agricultural zones. Furthermore, indirect impacts and positive externalities enhance the economic appeal of nature-based infrastructure like ANR.
• A SAVi assessment of a restoration project started in 2016 covering 2,868 hectares in southern Ethiopia monetized various costs and benefits—including wages, carbon credits, and maintenance costs—to determine that ANR is an investment-worthy strategy for supporting rural livelihoods and combating land degradation.
