Report of the Director to the EC and the CoP

The report details the IAI's efforts to maintain member country engagement, manage scientific research programs, and expand educational capacity in the Americas between July 2000 and June 2001.

• The IAI's Initial Science Program (ISP) has completed all projects from rounds I and II, and four of sixteen projects from round III. The total funding for the 39 awards across these rounds was $3,838,388.
• The Program to Expand Scientific Capacity in the Americas (PESCA) consists of 12 projects with a total funding of $273,523; most are expected to finish in 2001, though some faced delays in contract signing and fund disbursement.
• The IAI/UM Summer Institute, a collaboration with the University of Miami, has focused on interdisciplinary global change science over three years, with themes including climate variability, land-use/land-cover, and water resources management.
• The IAI's research programs have involved 459 unique scientists (73 PIs and 386 Co-PIs), with the highest number of participants from the USA (114), Brazil (59), and Argentina (58).
• The IAI has sought to revitalize institutional participation and secure voluntary contributions through missions to member countries, including Mexico, Venezuela, Canada, USA, Chile, and Paraguay.
• As of June 1, 2001, the Organization of American States (OAS) reported that no documentation had been received from member countries to ratify the amendment approved in CoP-VI Resolution #7.
