A notification from the Executive Directorate of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research regarding the composition of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science and Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) ahead of the 34th Conference of the Parties (CoP-34).

• The Executive Directorate has received nominations for the renewal of five members across two advisory committees: Carlos Joly (Brazil), Gilma Mantilla (Colombia), and Inty Arcos (Ecuador) for the Science and Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), and Laura Ramajo (Chile) and Pedro Laterra (Argentina) for the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC).
• The SAC has proposed three candidates to fill vacancies and an alternate position to enhance disciplinary diversity, gender balance, and regional representation. These include Shaneica Lester (a Caribbean early-career researcher specializing in SIDS, climate adaptation, food systems, and water security) to replace Dr. Alexander Turra, and Juan Camilo Cárdenas (a Colombian environmental economist) to replace Dr. Inés Camilloni. Additionally, Jeannette Ma. Arauz Muñoz from Central America is proposed as an alternate member.
• The proposal to appoint Dr. Juan Camilo Cárdenas aims to regularize the SAC's composition because the number of members appointed by the Parties currently exceeds the proportion set by the Regulations, while the number of members appointed by the SAC is below the required proportion. This imbalance occurred after the early departure of Dr. Michelle Scobie, a SAC-appointed member, whose vacancy was not filled.
• The 34th Conference of the Parties (CoP-34) is scheduled to take place virtually on June 3 and 4, 2026, where the renewal and new appointments of the committees will be considered for approval.
