Concept note: IAI Regional Assessment IAI Strategic Plan

This concept note outlines the plan for a Regional Assessment by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) to identify knowledge gaps and uncertainties in decisions impacted by global environmental change (GEC) across member countries. The assessment aims to align IAI science funding and capacity building with the specific policy and decision-making needs of the Parties.

• The Regional Assessment is designed to identify knowledge gaps and uncertainties regarding decisions impacted by global environmental change (GEC). The IAI intends to use these findings to support or facilitate science that specifically targets these gaps. Parties are asked to list decisions requiring scientific information, rather than describing their decision-making processes.
• The assessment is an internal process for each Party to gather information from government branches at the decision-making level. It covers issues impacted by GEC across various sectors, including energy, water, climate, health, environment, agriculture, development and planning, as well as risk management.
• The results of the assessment will be used to guide IAI capacity building activities and science funding priorities. The IAI will map information needs to find commonalities across countries in the Americas, which will help facilitate collaboration between Parties with similar priorities.
• The IAI established a multi-step approach for the assessment, consisting of scoping workshops with scientists and stakeholders, the dissemination of an electronic survey template to all Parties, follow-up interviews with a subset of Parties, and data analysis to map decisions and information needs.
• The project timeline began with the creation of a regional assessment subcommittee and the concept note in May 2021. The schedule included survey creation in July and August 2021, survey distribution in September 2021, and two rounds of analysis between December 2021 and April 2022, with the final results intended for presentation at CoP-30 in June 2022.
