Report of the IAI Directorate Science

• The IAI is formulating the fourth round of Collaborative Research Networks (CRN4), which will differ from previous programs by being demand-driven rather than theme-driven. CRN4 will focus on scientific research questions identified by national policy makers and stakeholders, align with international frameworks like the SDGs, and require Parties to provide co-funding for national teams.
• A research co-design process has been initiated for climate adaptation in megacities, specifically involving the governments and civil societies of Buenos Aires, São Paulo, and Santiago de Chile. The process identified five shared problem areas: decarbonization, climate-related health, climatic extreme events, the human dimension of adaptation/vulnerability, and governance.
• The IAI maintains a collaborative framework with the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) of Argentina, which provides matching funds for Argentinean CRN3 project teams. After a period of interruption, CONICET resumed these contributions and research activities in 2018.
• The IAI is implementing strategies to enhance science communication and data accessibility, including the design of an open data platform and the creation of project info-sheets. Additionally, the IAI plans to publish position papers in a peer-reviewed journal special issue to commemorate its 25th anniversary and synthesize CRN results.
