IAI Directorate Report to the Twenty Fourth Conference of the Parties

• The Third Collaborative Research Network Program (CRN3), running from November 2012 through 2018, consists of 17 international research networks involving 17 PIs, 95 co-investigators, and 90 institutions from 15 IAI member countries. The program has leveraged US$ 23.5 million in additional funding and provided scholarships to 264 students totaling US$ 929,198.
• CRN3 has advanced interdisciplinary, solution-oriented research by integrating social sciences and agent-based modeling. Examples include the use of 'affecters' and 'beneficiaries' frameworks in ecosystem services (CRN3094, CRN3095, CRN3038), the simulation of insect-borne diseases like malaria and dengue (CRN3036), and the creation of a fisheries co-management program in Uruguay that reopened the yellow clam fishery in Rocha (CRN3070).
• In 2015, the Argentinean Scientific Research Council (CONICET) established a US$ 200,000 fund to supplement CRN3 research activities for Argentinean teams over four years. From nine proposals, the IAI selected seven projects focusing on marine, terrestrial, and atmospheric global change issues.
• The IAI is promoting the Inter-American Forum for Cooperation in Global Change Research to create a multilateral funding mechanism linking national funding agencies. This initiative is based on the Belmont Forum experience, and a draft agreement developed with Argentina's CONICET has been reviewed by FAPESP in São Paulo State.
