IAI activities plan July 2015 – June 2016

The IAI activities plan for 2015-2016 focuses on completing a tripartite institutional structure across Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, while advancing interdisciplinary research and capacity building. Key initiatives include a small grants call on ecosystem services in adaptation, professional development seminars in Colombia and Panama, and the development of four global environmental change seminars for 2016-2018. The institute also continues its engagement with IPBES and the UNFCCC SBSTA process.

• The IAI is implementing a tripartite institutional structure, with the Montevideo office staffing complete and the transition of administration from Brazil to Uruguay scheduled for completion in the second half of 2015. The host country agreement with Argentina is awaiting minor revisions from the Ministry of Foreign Relations, and a renewed agreement with Brazil is under review.
• The IAI is launching a small grants call focused on "the role of ecosystem services in adaptation," which aligns with the CoP 22 mandate to strengthen adaptation research and promote interdisciplinary science programs.
• Planned capacity building activities for 2015 include a professional development seminar on Integrated Management of Underground Water in Cartagena, Colombia (September 7-11), and a conference on Sustainable Development and Global Environmental Change in Panama City (October 27-29). A workshop on climate change impacts on biodiversity in the Tropical Andes is tentatively scheduled for November 2015, pending funding from the MacArthur Foundation.
• Between 2016 and 2018, the IAI intends to develop four Professional Development Seminars regarding global environmental change (GEC) and policy application, covering transdisciplinary team management, tropical forest ecosystem services, global change and health approaches, and climate change impacts on human health in the MERCOSUR.
• The IAI maintains policy engagement through working groups of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) process.
