A statement from the Chair and members of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Science Advisory Committee (SAC) to the IAI Executive Council and Conference of the Parties (CoP) requesting the urgent appointment of new members to fill upcoming vacancies.

• The IAI Science Advisory Committee (SAC) faces a significant membership turnover, with six vacancies opening in June 2013 and three more members rotating off in 2014, potentially leading to a nearly complete substitution of the committee within 14 months.
• The SAC requests that the Conference of the Parties (CoP) use its June 2013 meeting in Montevideo to nominate and appoint highly qualified scientists to strengthen the committee and establish methods to maintain continuity and experience.
• New SAC appointments should possess high academic and research excellence, a doctorate or equivalent experience, and a record of managing international scientific projects relevant to IAI strategic areas. Candidates must understand the ecological, social, and economic realities of the Americas, as well as the relationships between policy-makers and scientists.
• The SAC seeks to balance and augment expertise across the natural sciences, social sciences, and public health to provide credibility and influence with the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) teams, which will conduct IAI science programs for the next five years.
