DECIMONOVENA CONFERENCIA DE LAS PARTES DEL IAI (CoP)

The 19th Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held on February 15, 2012, agreed to expand the IAI's executive capacity and distribute its operations across Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay to better support scientific knowledge for public policy and global change capacity in the Americas.

• The CoP agreed to strengthen the IAI's Executive Directorate by adding two new Director positions—one for scientific development and one for communications—to improve public awareness and provide scientific knowledge for public policy formulation. These directors will report to the Director General, and the IAI will strive to implement these changes without increasing the Operating Budget.
• The IAI will implement a distributed Executive Directorate based on a tripartite proposal from Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Scientific development activities will be based in São José dos Campos, Brazil; communication and science-policy liaison will be based in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and general coordination and integration will be based in Montevideo, Uruguay.
• An ad hoc commission consisting of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, the United States, and Uruguay is tasked with preparing a detailed integrated proposal for the tripartite agreement, to be presented for approval at CoP-20 between June 27 and 29, 2012.
