IAI Science Advisory Council Nominations for 2010

The IAI is seeking to fill two vacancies on its Science Advisory Council in 2010, replacing Rana Fine and Maria Carmen Lemos. The nominations will target four priority areas: Climate Science (specifically climate modeling), Ecosystems and climate (specifically biodiversity), Policy and Human Dimensions of global change (including vulnerability assessment, mitigation, adaptation, and science-policy interaction), and Integration and modeling (focusing on resilience and social-ecological systems modeling). Candidates are evaluated based on basic criteria of scientific excellence, geopolitical balance across the Americas and the Caribbean, and gender balance, as well as second-tier considerations including interdisciplinary research ability, representation of science in the Americas, and the ability to bridge the science-policy divide.

• The IAI identified four primary research priority areas for the 2010 SAC nominations: Climate Science (with a focus on "climate modeling"), Ecosystems and climate (focusing on "Ecosystem biodiversity and climate"), Policy and Human Dimensions of global change (covering "Vulnerability Assessment", "Mitigation and Adaptation", and "Science-policy interaction"), and Integration and modeling (emphasizing "Resilience (social-ecological systems)" and "Social Ecological Systems (SES) modeling").
• The basic criteria for SAC nominations include scientific excellence—defined as research with "high intellectual merit" and "high societal impact"—as well as gender balance and geopolitical balance to ensure fairness between "North, Central and South America & the Caribbean".
• Secondary considerations for nominees include the capacity for interdisciplinary research to understand "positive and negative feedbacks between different systems", the ability to represent the "best science available in the Americas", and the ability to "straddle the science-policy divide" to produce usable science for decision-makers.
