This report details the activities and progress of twelve projects under the second round of the Collaborative Research Network (CRN II) from September 1, 2006, to August 31, 2007. CRN2021 has produced 'The Declaration of Isla Margarita', which highlights the need for the conservation and research of tropical dry forests in the Americas.
• Research into tropical cyclones and coastal vulnerability is being conducted in the Caribbean. Project CRN2050 (Kam-Biu Liu) emphasizes the necessity of accurate scientific information and long-term perspectives for hurricane risk assessment. Project CRN2061 (Michael McClain) has compiled 477 regional-scale geospatial data layers to develop island-specific models for coastal scenarios.
• Project CRN2060 is examining adaptation strategies related to the coffee crisis in Mesoamerica, utilizing eleven study areas across Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica. Initial data indicate that farmers' livelihoods are impacted by pests/diseases, climatic events, and price fluctuations, with variations based on farm size, altitude, and organization level.
• Oceanographic and hydrological research is being conducted across the Americas. Project CRN2076 is studying oceanic changes in South America, including the Brazil/Malvinas mode water formation and the Patagonia shelfbreak front. Project CRN2047 is documenting changes in the hydrological cycle of the American Cordillera, with activities including the reconstruction of streamflow for the St. Mary’s River in Canada.
