Annual Program

The IAI's 2006/07 program focuses on transitioning from a period of scientific excellence to one of policy relevance and regional integration. Key initiatives include the implementation of the second Collaborative Research Network (CRN II), the synthesis of CRN I, and the development of a Program on Climate Variability in the Americas with CPTEC. The IAI aims to strengthen capacity building through seed grants, training institutes on disaster risk and climate impacts, and strategic partnerships with organizations like the UN ISDR and IICA. Administrative efforts are centered on optimizing internal processes through new manuals and an electronic proposal and report system.

• The IAI is implementing six major strategies endorsed in December 2002 to fulfill its mandate, which include expanding cooperative research networks, prioritizing projects that integrate global change research with sustainable development, and targeting scientifically weak member countries for capacity-building.
• The Collaborative Research Network (CRN I) program is scheduled for completion by 31 May 2006, with a final program report due to the NSF by 31 August 2006.
• The IAI is launching CRN II in 2006 with a specific effort to address the under-representation of human dimensions and develop a science portfolio with regional policy relevance.
• A two-year Program on Climate Variability in the Americas is being developed with the Center for Weather Forecast and Climate Studies (CPTEC), offering 3 to 6 co-sponsored research internships annually for IAI member country personnel.
• The IAI is planning joint Training Institutes for 2006-2008 focused on the science-policy interface, including topics such as disaster risk reduction (with ISDR), climate variability impacts on agriculture, water, and health (with IRI), and global change and agriculture production (with IICA).
• To improve administrative efficiency, the Directorate is implementing an Employee Handbook, a Project Management Manual, a Grant Agreement, and a Procurement Manual.
