This report from the Executive Directorate of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) details activities from July 2003 to June 2004. These events included participants from all Latin American Member States and non-members such as El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
• The IAI is updating its Data and Information System (DIS) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to improve user-friendliness and integrate with external systems like LBA-DIS and NBII, with a planned community opening in January 2005.
• The institute faced a significant administrative crisis in March 2004 when the foundation employing local staff terminated its contract with INPE, leading to the dismissal of all staff. The subsequent winning bidder offered salaries 40% lower than previous levels, resulting in low staff morale.
• Financially, the IAI aimed to close the fiscal year with $100,000 in savings on basic budget expenses due to strict controls and the collection of 94% of expected contributions, resulting in a positive cash flow balance of $50,000.
