Impacto de los cambios en la cobertura y uso de la tierra en el hidroclima de la cuenca del rio de la plata

A research project is using 1980-2005 data and WRF modeling to analyze how agricultural and forestry expansion affects the hydroclimate, hydrological characteristics, and extreme weather events (floods and droughts) in the Plata Basin. The project introduces Ecosystem Functional Types (EFTs) to better model annual land cover evolution.

• Since late 2008, a project has been investigating how significant changes in land use and cover—driven by the expansion of forestry and agriculture—impact the regional hydroclimate of the Plata Basin and interact with climate change.
• The project aims to create 25-year databases combining in-situ and remote measurements of land use and cover to develop regional models that assess the magnitude and method of land-use change effects on the Plata Basin's hydroclimate.
• Research objectives include investigating potential changes in basin hydrological characteristics, such as runoff, infiltration, and soil moisture, as well as the role of land cover changes in the duration and intensity of floods and droughts.
• The study utilizes databases from 1980-2005 and a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) modeling system on a continental scale with a nested grid over the Plata Basin to perform regional soil surface reanalysis.
• The project has introduced a new approach using Ecosystem Functional Types (EFTs) to study annual evolution, intended to replace the fixed land cover types currently used in regional models.
