The Benefits Recycling Pallets Pays The Challenge

This case study describes a partnership facilitated by the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) between waste management company Enviroserv and ComboTimber Structures to divert wood pallets from landfills and remanufacture them for reuse.

• The partnership between Enviroserv and ComboTimber Structures, established after a WISP workshop in August 2014, led to the diversion of 79 tonnes of wood from landfills and a reduction of 200 tonnes of CO2e fossil greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding decomposition in landfills.
• The collaboration resulted in significant economic gains, including R29,000 in cost savings from diverting wood from landfills and R174,000 in additional revenue generated through the sale of remanufactured wood pallets.
• ComboTimber Structures shifted its business model from manufacturing virgin wood pallets to using only broken wood pallets and other timber packaging material for production. This transition led to the creation of 3 permanent jobs and a R100,000 investment in new equipment to handle increased volumes.
