Banners to Bags

WISP facilitated a partnership between Scan Display and Sealand Gear in 2015 to repurpose discarded event banners. This collaboration diverts 2 tonnes of polytwirl from landfills annually, avoids 54 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, and generates R270,000 in annual material savings for Sealand Gear.

• In October 2015, WISP connected Scan Display and Sealand Gear to create a symbiotic relationship where discarded event banners are repurposed for manufacturing. This initiative diverts 2 tonnes (approximately 13,500m2) of polytwirl material, which has a thickness of about 0.2mm, from landfills every year.
• The partnership provides significant economic benefits to both companies. Sealand Gear saves an estimated R270,000 per year by avoiding the purchase of new polytwirl material, which costs approximately R20/m. Scan Display saves an estimated R900 per year on landfill gate fees, which were R450/t at the time of writing.
• The environmental impact of the collaboration includes the avoidance of 54 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year and the diversion of 2 tonnes of banner material from landfills.
