Case Study 001 Event-ual Landfill Diversion

The World Economic Forum (WEF) partnered with the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) to manage tear-down waste from a 2015 event at the Cape Town International Conference Centre. By identifying resource types and volumes two months in advance, WISP connected the WEF with solution providers to repurpose pine wood, carpeting, promotional materials, and PVC banners. This initiative diverted 11.8 tonnes of waste from landfills, saved 10 tonnes of fossil greenhouse gas emissions, and generated approximately R242,000 in total economic benefits.

• The project successfully diverted 11.8 tonnes, or 83%, of exhibition waste from landfills, resulting in the savings of 10 tonnes of fossil greenhouse gas emissions in terms of carbon dioxide.
• The waste diversion effort generated total economic benefits of approximately R242,000, which included R193,000 in additional revenue and R20,000 saved by the WEF on waste service costs.
• Repurposed materials provided social benefits, including the use of pine wood to repair flooring for informal housing in Hout Bay and Imizamo Yethu, the carpeting of a community school for underprivileged children, and woodwork skills training for 60 unemployed or disabled learners.
• The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP), delivered by GreenCape and initiated by the Western Cape Government, facilitates resource efficiency by linking companies to recover and reuse under-utilised materials, energy, and water.
