Case Study 001 Event-ual Landfill Diversion

This case study describes a waste diversion project facilitated by the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) for the World Economic Forum (WEF) event held at the Cape Town International Conference Centre (CTICC) in 2015.

• WISP facilitated the diversion of 11.8 tonnes of exhibition waste from landfills, which represented 83% of the total waste produced. This resulted in an estimated 10 tonnes of fossil greenhouse gas savings in terms of carbon dioxide.
• The project generated approximately R242,000 in total economic spinoffs. This includes R193,000 in additional revenue, R20,000 saved by the WEF on waste service costs, and approximately R29,600 saved by companies using second-hand timber.
• Specific waste materials were repurposed by various providers: pine wood was used by Furntech, Combo Timbers, and Plant People for furniture, pallets, and flooring repairs; carpeting was used by True-North for a community school; promotional materials were used by Kunye for jewellery boxes; and PVC banners were used by Learn to Earn to make bags for WEF staff.
• The initiative produced social benefits, including the creation of two temporary jobs for wood collection, woodwork skills training for 60 unemployed or disabled learners, and the provision of building maintenance materials in Imizamo Yethu.
