RESILIENT AGRICULTURE INNOVATIONS FOR NATURE (RAIN) CHALLENGE

The Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) challenge is a joint initiative by the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) and Munich Re Foundation to identify and scale innovative, nature-positive agricultural solutions in East Africa. The program provides selected not-for-profit organizations with mentoring, leadership training, and financial support to make their initiatives 'funding-ready' for private investors and donors.

• The RAIN challenge targets not-for-profit organizations, including public entities, local civil society, international NGOs, and academia, specifically those operating as start-ups, hubs, accelerators, or experienced implementers in East Africa.
• The program seeks 'nature positive' solutions that increase resilience for those most impacted by climate shocks, protect biodiversity, and incorporate considerations for human rights, equity, and gender.
• Winners of the challenge receive a comprehensive support package including tailored mentoring, communications assistance, and access to a Leadership Academy. Additionally, they are eligible for a cash prize of up to 50,000 USD for project implementation and scaling over 12 months, provided they graduate from the challenge and meet pre-agreed criteria.
• The selection process involves a rigorous assessment based on a 100-point scale across seven criteria: Innovativeness (15), Potential for impact (15), Equity (15), Scalability (15), Viability and Sustainability (15), Team Composition / Organisation (15), and Risk (10).
• The challenge follows a specific timeline: it launched on 11 December 2024, with a submission deadline of 31 January 2025. Winners are expected to be announced by May or June 2025, with support services provided from March to October 2025.
• Mentoring is provided by experts with at least 10 years of experience using a four-step framework that includes a Value Chain Driven Viability Analysis and a Resilience and Scaling assessment.
