CALL FOR TRANSDISCIPLINARY WORKING GROUPS 2025 - 2027

The Southern African Resilience Academy (SARA), coordinated by the Centre for Sustainability Transitions at Stellenbosch University and the Global Resilience Partnership, is issuing a call for applications for transdisciplinary working groups for the 2025-2027 period. Under the theme "Transformative Pathways to Resilient and Sustainable Futures," these groups will conduct synthesis projects to influence policy and practice regarding resilience and development in the southern African region.

• The 2025-2027 SARA call focuses on the theme "Transformative Pathways to Resilient and Sustainable Futures," which encourages a pathways approach to transforming systems such as food, water, and conservation to meet biodiversity, climate, and societal goals.
• Working groups must consist of 5 to 8 members, including two co-leads, and must include members based in at least two African countries, with a preference for those based in southern Africa.
• SARA requires working groups to produce two primary types of outputs by 2027: a peer-reviewed academic publication (such as a journal article) and a strategic engagement process involving knowledge products designed for policy and practitioner audiences.
• The program provides financial and professional support, including funding for three in-person meetings in the greater Cape Town/Stellenbosch area of South Africa between 2025 and 2027, open access publication fees, and access to scientific communication clinics.
• The call emphasizes synthesis work over new data collection; proposals should not require new fieldwork or extensive data collection unless such work is already embedded in a member's external role and is co-financed.
• SARA is the southern African node of the "South-to-South Resilience Academies," an initiative by the Global Resilience Partnership to strengthen research and practice networks in the Global South and facilitate knowledge transfer to the Global North.
