- In Sub-Saharan Africa, operational capacity is stable at 46.9 GW, with South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe accounting for 97% of this total. South Africa alone represents 93% of the region's capacity and operates the world's sixth-largest coal fleet.
- The European Union and the United Kingdom are leading coal elimination efforts, with coal-based electricity production in Europe collapsing by 26% in 2023. However, to reach a total phase-out by 2030, the region must retire an average of 15.6 GW of capacity annually for the next seven years.
- In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), no new coal projects have been under study for three consecutive years. Only Israel and Morocco currently operate coal capacity in the region, totaling 8.6 GW.
- Captive coal projects, which serve industry rather than the electrical grid, are emerging as a new challenge. Examples include two chrome production projects in Zimbabwe (1.9 GW) and nickel industry projects in Indonesia.
