New Hubs of Gas Extraction in Africa

• There is a shift in African gas extraction toward countries that have not historically exploited fossil fuels. Data from the Global Oil and Gas Extraction Tracker (GOGET) indicates that 84 percent of new reserves in pre-production are located in recent market entrants, including Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania, Mauritania, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Morocco.
• New gas reserves in these emerging markets total over 5137.5 billion cubic meters (bcm), with potential emissions of approximately 11.9 billion tons of CO2. If these projects proceed, Africa's gas production could increase by one third by 2030, requiring an estimated US$329 billion in greenfield investment for extraction and export infrastructure.
• The development of these gas fields is primarily oriented toward export, which the report concludes will not significantly improve low electrification rates across Africa. Furthermore, this investment may negatively impact local health and environments, increase exposure to gas market volatility, and hinder the continent's ability to invest in a clean energy transition.
