GEC Steering Group, Wednesday 26th August 2020– MINUTES

Minutes from the Green Economy Coalition (GEC) Steering Group meeting on August 26, 2020, focusing on the 'Economics for Nature' (E4N) programme, the establishment of an Amazon Regional Hub in partnership with FAS, and strategic responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

• The Economics for Nature (E4N) programme, a six-year initiative run by GEC with partners WWF France, GGKP, and Capitals Coalition, aims to support the national adoption of natural capital based green economies. The programme is funded until the end of 2022 and has worked with 13 governments to improve their understanding of natural capital.
• GEC is expanding its Green Economy Tracker to 20–40 countries to serve as a tool for a COVID-19 campaign, allowing stakeholders to hold national recovery efforts accountable.
• GEC has established the Amazon Regional Hub based at the Fundação Amazonas Sustentável (FAS) in Manaus, Brazil. Supported by £60,000 of EC funding and contributions from FAS, the Hub aims to coordinate a programme for an 'inclusive and sustainable Amazon Bioeconomy' and will hire a locally based Amazon Hub Convenor.
• The GEC is planning a series of launch webinars for the Amazon Hub, including an international session titled 'Amazon Day' scheduled for September 23 at the UN General Assembly, led by FAS.
• GEC is exploring a 'Social contract' approach as part of its COVID-19 response, following mentions of the concept by the WEF's 'great reset', the UN, and ITUC. The Steering Group requested research into the meaning and utility of the term to avoid the risk of it being too vague or purely political.
• The GEC's strategic priority to achieve mainstreaming economic reform is currently rated as 'Amber' because the COVID-19 recovery presents a unique opportunity for green economy reforms that GEC is still determining how to influence globally.
