Minutes of GEC Steering Group

Minutes from the Green Economy Coalition (GEC) Steering Group meeting on December 14, 2017, reviewing the 2017 global meeting in Trinidad, evaluating the coalition's impact, and outlining strategic priorities for 2018, including a focus on SME outreach and a distributed delivery model.

• The GEC annual global meeting took place from November 1 to 4, 2017, in Trinidad, co-hosted by CANARI. While successful in engaging dialogue partners and the Caribbean network, and resulting in the "co-creation of the Santa Cruz declaration", the meeting failed to engage traditional GEC partners as none were willing to travel.
• The 2017 review indicates that the GEC successfully influenced international organisations to focus on the "inclusiveness of green growth models". Key achievements included the launch of the Natural Capital Programme, the expansion of hubs in the GE dialogues project, and the production of the "Principles Priorities and Pathways" document.
• The GEC faces a strategic tension between "breadth versus depth", having prioritised a broad definition of the Green Economy to counter narrower versions of Green Growth. To manage this and reduce dependency on the secretariat, the GEC uses a "distributed delivery model" where specific partners lead thematic areas, such as IIED leading on dialogues and CAFOD leading "Green Must Be Fair".
• Strategic priorities for 2018 include accelerating SME outreach, developing a partner growth strategy to improve the "north south balance of the GEC", and organising the next global meeting in South Africa to coincide with the PAGE ministerial (September 4-6, 2018).
