Redesigning the Rules: Power, Purpose and the Future of Our Economy

Prepared remarks for the Sussex School for Progressive Futures outlining the mission of the Global Research and Action Network for a New Eco-Social Contract, which seeks to overhaul the 20th-century social contract to address climate breakdown, inequality, and human rights.

• The 20th-century social contract, based on a bargain between growth/productivity and redistribution/social protection, is considered broken and unable to support the 2030 Agenda. A new 21st-century eco-social contract is proposed to ensure human rights for marginalized groups—including women, migrants, and informal workers—provide security in a changing world, and drive the transformation of societies to stop environmental destruction and climate change.
• The Global Research and Action Network for a New Eco-Social Contract, jointly hosted by the Green Economy Coalition (GEC) and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), aims to define the terms of a new contract to enable a just transition to fair, green, and climate-resilient economies. The network focuses on integrating various forms of justice, including climate, environmental, racial, and intergenerational justice, as well as the rights of the natural world.
