BÂTIR UN MOUVEMENT DE JEUNES INCLUSIF ET INTER-RÉGIONAL POUR LA JUSTICE ENVIRONNEMENTALE / CONSTRUCCIÓN DE UN MOVIMIENTO INCLUSIVO E INTERREGIONAL DE JÓVENES POR LA JUSTICIA AMBIENTAL

This report documents the outcomes of an interregional exchange between young activists from Friends of the Earth (FoE) Africa and Europe conducted between 2016 and 2018. The project aimed to strengthen the youth movement for environmental justice through 14 exchange trips, two regional meetings, and three interregional encounters, focusing on inclusivity, interregional solidarity, and the dismantling of systemic oppressions such as colonialism and patriarchy.

• The project utilized popular education methodologies and specific learning tools to analyze systemic inequalities. These included a 'Regional Event Timeline' to explore historical and modern colonial connections between seven European and seven African countries, and a 'Support Pillars' model used in Amsterdam to strategize the dismantling of systemic oppressions like racism, neocolonialism, and patriarchy.
• Youth activists in Liberia face significant marginalization, often viewed as rebels by authorities and elders, particularly regarding decisions on land and natural resources. The report notes a trend where the government slows the environmental justice movement by offering lucrative government positions to strong young activists to shift their focus away from activism.
• The report highlights a severe environmental health crisis in Durban, South Africa, specifically in an area known as the 'Cancer Valley'. Residents there face a 2400% higher probability of being diagnosed with leukemia compared to other parts of South Africa, and half of the local schoolchildren suffer from asthma due to emissions from two oil refineries and other factories over 50 years old.
• There is a stark disparity in freedom of movement between the Global North and South, which hinders international solidarity. In July 2017, only three out of seven African participants were granted Schengen visas for a meeting in Brussels, while European participants faced almost no obstacles traveling to Africa.
• The document argues that the 'Fortress Europe' mentality and restrictive visa policies exclude Global South voices from critical climate decision-making processes. This is particularly problematic when major UN climate negotiations, such as COP 23 in Bonn, Germany, are held in Europe, creating barriers for the most vulnerable populations.
