Media Statement

EESI President Daniel Bresette notes that while over 50 U.S. state and local leaders and business representatives engaged with COP30's Action Agenda in Brazil, the U.S. federal government was largely absent due to a shutdown, with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse being the sole federal official in attendance.

• At COP30, over 50 state and local leaders, along with senior business representatives, expressed a commitment to science-based climate mitigation and adaptation. The Brazil Presidency utilized an 'Action Agenda' to connect negotiated decisions with private sector and subnational government solutions.
• U.S. federal representation at COP30 was minimal due to a shutdown, which prevented delegations of members of Congress from both parties from attending. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) was the only federal official present at the event.
