Technical Aspects of Nodal Pricing

For example, PJM's 'Western' operational limit decreased from approximately 20% of capacity 15 years ago to 1% of capacity today, whereas some European Interconnectors maintain transmission reliability margins of about 50%.
- The EU Target Model aims for a common framework by 2015 using a flow-based approach to calculate transmission capacity between zones. This process involves identifying critical network elements, deriving a DC approximation of the AC network, and determining generation shift keys (GSKs) to translate generation units to zones.
- US Independent System Operators (ISOs) act as intermediate institutions that integrate short-term market and system perspectives. This model allowed US transmission owners to retain asset control and avoid the risks of system operation, while providing a transparent platform for day-ahead and intraday market clearing that supports longer-term hedging via reference prices.
- Shadow prices emerging from congestion management based on the physical grid can quantify the value of transmission expansion and inform investment decisions. In US nodal pricing markets, generation investment is partly informed by these prices, though investors use financial transmission rights to hedge against future congestion changes.
