GLOSSARY OF LAND TENURE CATEGORIES OF THE AMAZON BIOME

This document provides a glossary of land tenure categories used in a georeferenced database for the Amazon biome, defining various types of public, private, and protected territories, including indigenous lands and agrarian reform settlements.

• The document defines several categories of public land, including 'Undesignated Public Forest', which is public owned forest with unassigned use, and 'Public Area', which refers to public territory without a specific purpose registered with the National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA).
• Private rural properties are classified by size based on the number of fiscal modules: small properties are those smaller than 4 modules, medium properties are between 4 and 15, and large properties are those larger than 15.
• Indigenous lands are categorized as either 'Homologated' (declared, homologated, or regularized) or 'Non-Homologated' (delimited or under study). According to the Brazilian Federal Constitution of 1988, these are federal assets for the exclusive usufruct of authorized indigenous communities.
• The glossary distinguishes between two types of conservation units: 'Full Protection', which is exclusively for nature conservation, and 'Sustainable Use', which reconciles nature conservation with the sustainable use of resources. Notably, Environmental Protection Areas (APA) are not considered Sustainable Use Conservation Units in the land tenure georeferenced database.
