IDFC Green Finance 2019

The IDFC Green Finance 2019 report details the climate and environmental finance commitments of 22 out of 26 member national and regional development banks. In 2019, members committed $197 billion in green finance, representing approximately 25% of their total new commitments, with a strong focus on green energy and mitigation in the East Asia and Pacific region.

• In 2019, IDFC members reported $197 billion in green finance commitments, a 47% increase from 2018, though this remained below the peak seen in 2017. Since 2015, cumulative green finance commitments have reached $867 billion.
• Climate finance, which includes mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change adaptation, made up 95% of total green finance, totaling $187 billion. Within this, green energy and GHG mitigation were the largest category at 87%, while adaptation accounted for 10%, marking a 25% increase from 2018 and more than triple the 2015 levels.
• The majority of green finance in 2019 was provided by institutions based in non-OECD countries, who committed $146 billion (74%), while OECD-based institutions committed $51 billion (26%).
• Geographically, the East Asia and Pacific region received the largest share of commitments at 69%. Commitments to Eastern Europe and Central Asia rose to $10 billion (5%), and Sub-Saharan Africa received $4.5 billion (2%).
• Most green finance was delivered as loans, totaling $190 billion (97% of the total), while grants accounted for $4 billion.
