An Assessment of India’s Energy Choices

This foreword introduces 'An Assessment of India’s Energy Choices', a series of four reports commissioned by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and supported by the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation. The assessment evaluates the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of renewable energy penetration in India, concluding that wind and solar energy offer superior investment returns and significant job creation potential compared to fossil fuels.

• Indian wind and solar energy have become more attractive investment opportunities than coal and natural gas, offering an average of 12% higher annual returns, 20% lower annual volatility, and 61% higher risk-adjusted returns.
• The deployment of renewable energy is closely tied to India's economic growth, with the potential to create between 2 million and 4.5 million jobs in the solar and wind sectors by 2042 under realistic predictions.
• The Government of India has set a target of 175 GW of renewable energy for its energy mix, though it acknowledges that achieving this may be challenging as renewable energy may not have a level playing field with fossil-fuel based energy.
