THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF AGRICULTURAL EXPANSION IN MATOPIBA

The paper finds that agricultural expansion in the Matopiba region, driven by soy cultivation, significantly increased GDP per capita and improved access to durable goods and electricity in municipalities within the Cerrado biome. While agricultural and services GDP grew, there were no significant effects on manufacturing GDP, local population, or educational outcomes.

• Agricultural expansion in the Matopiba region was concentrated in the Cerrado biome, with cropland increasing 3.6 percentage points more and the value of agricultural production increasing 140% more in Cerrado municipalities compared to non-Cerrado municipalities between 1999 and 2012.
• The expansion was characterized by a shift in crop mix, specifically an increase in the relative importance of soy cultivation and a decrease in the relative importance of rice and cassava.
• Agricultural expansion positively impacted economic performance in Cerrado municipalities, with GDP per capita growing 11% more than in non-Cerrado municipalities from 1999 to 2012. This was driven by a 37% relative growth in agricultural GDP per capita and a 10% increase in services GDP per capita.
• The growth in services GDP indicates a spillover effect from agricultural expansion to other industries via forward and backward linkages, although no significant effect was found on manufacturing GDP.
• Agricultural expansion led to improved access to certain durable consumer goods and basic infrastructure in Cerrado municipalities between 2000 and 2010, specifically for televisions, refrigerators, and electric power.
• The expansion did not result in significant changes to the share of households with access to cars, water, or sewage, nor did it affect local population levels or educational outcomes.
