• In 2021, IDFC member institutions reported a record high of USD 224 billion in total green finance commitments, marking a 21% increase from 2020. Since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015, cumulative green finance commitments from these members have exceeded USD 1.2 trillion.
• Climate finance, which includes activities for greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation and climate change adaptation, made up 95% of total green finance in 2021, totaling USD 212.7 billion. Within this, mitigation finance reached a record USD 186.6 billion (an increase of 27% over 2020), while adaptation finance fell by 24% to USD 20.9 billion, largely due to a 50% drop in disaster risk reduction commitments compared to 2020.
• Other environmental finance categories in 2021 included USD 18.4 billion for biodiversity projects (a 31% increase from 2020), covering areas such as wastewater treatment and biodiversity conservation, and USD 3.5 billion for other environmental objectives, including pollution projects.
