IDFC Green Finance Mapping 2022

In 2021, IDFC members committed a record USD 224 billion in green finance, a 21% increase from 2020. Climate finance dominated the total at 95% (USD 212.7 billion), with mitigation finance reaching a peak of USD 186.6 billion. Conversely, adaptation finance fell by 24% to USD 20.9 billion, largely due to a 50% drop in disaster risk reduction commitments. Biodiversity projects saw growth, reaching USD 18.4 billion.

• IDFC members reached a record high of USD 224 billion in total green finance commitments in 2021, marking a 21% increase over 2020. Since the 2015 Paris Agreement, cumulative green finance commitments from these members have exceeded USD 1.2 trillion.
• Climate finance accounted for 95% of total green finance (USD 212.7 billion) in 2021. Within this, mitigation finance rose 27% over 2020 to reach USD 186.6 billion, while adaptation finance decreased by 24% to USD 20.9 billion, primarily because commitments for disaster risk reduction (excluding coastal protection) were 50% lower than in 2020.
• Funding for biodiversity projects increased by 31% over 2020 to reach USD 18.4 billion in 2021, covering areas such as waste management, biodiversity conservation, wastewater treatment, and water supply. An additional USD 3.5 billion was reported for other environmental objectives, including pollution projects.
