Assessing the Capital Costs of Maximizing Sustainable Agricultural Production in Brazil

This report by the Climate Policy Initiative and PUC-Rio analyzes the capital requirements necessary to maximize agricultural productivity in Brazil without increasing deforestation, focusing on crop and beef output at the municipality level.

• Brazil has the potential to increase crop output by 79.0-104.5% and beef output by 26.8% without increasing deforestation or the area used for pastures.
• Achieving these production increases would require significant capital investments, specifically an increase in the value of farm equipment by 47.5-51.6% (USD 34.4-37.4 billion) and an increase in operational costs by 43.5-50.5% (USD 44.4-51.2 billion).
• The required increases in capital are not uniform across the country, with significant regional heterogeneity; the most substantial increases are concentrated in areas such as the north of Goiás state and the Vale do Ribeira region in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states.
