Global Landscape of Climate Finance 2024

Global climate finance reached USD 1.46 trillion in 2022, showing resilience despite global crises. While advanced economies saw steady growth driven by domestic policy and stimulus, emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) experienced inconsistent trends, with significant recoveries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia between 2020 and 2022. Private sector contributions to mitigation finance exceeded 50% in several EMDE regions, and finance to least developed countries (LDCs) more than doubled from 2018 to 2022.

• Global climate finance reached USD 1.46 trillion in 2022, maintaining an upward trend despite the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, and international conflicts.
• Climate finance in advanced economies grew from USD 342 billion in 2018 to USD 589 billion in 2022, a 15% compound annual growth rate, with domestic finance accounting for 88% of the total in 2022.
• Finance to emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) was inconsistent; while sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) saw declines in 2020 compared to 2018, there was a recovery between 2020 and 2022. Specifically, finance to sub-Saharan Africa rose from USD 10 billion to USD 19 billion, and South Asia's grew from USD 26 billion to USD 41 billion.
• Climate finance for least developed countries (LDCs) more than doubled over five years, increasing from USD 19 billion in 2018 to USD 39 billion in 2022.
• Private sector funding for energy systems resulted in the private sector providing over 50% of mitigation finance from 2018 to 2022 in several EMDE regions, including LAC, South Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe, and MENA.
