IDFC Green Finance Mapping 2023

In 2022, IDFC members committed a record USD 288 billion in green finance, a 29% increase from 2021. Climate finance dominated these commitments, accounting for 98% of the total, with mitigation finance reaching USD 244.7 billion and adaptation finance increasing by 52% to USD 31.6 billion.

• IDFC members reached a record high of USD 288 billion in total green finance commitments in 2022, marking a 29% increase from 2021. Since the 2015 Paris Agreement, cumulative green finance commitments from these members have exceeded USD 1.5 trillion.
• Climate finance, which includes greenhouse gas mitigation and climate change adaptation, made up 98% of total green finance in 2022, totaling USD 281.9 billion. Mitigation finance reached a peak of USD 244.7 billion (a 31% increase over 2021), while adaptation finance rose 52% to a record USD 31.6 billion, largely due to doubled commitments for water preservation.
• Other green finance categories in 2022 included USD 18.2 billion for biodiversity projects—covering areas such as wastewater treatment, agriculture, and natural resources—and USD 2 billion for other environmental objectives, including pollution projects.
