Summary
Since 1970, spring temperatures in the contiguous U.S. have increased by an average of 2°F, with the most significant warming occurring in the Southwest. Analysis of 239 locations shows that 96% of cities experienced warming, with some locations in Nevada, Texas, and Arizona exceeding 6°F. This trend is characterized by an increase in warmer-than-normal spring days, which contributes to earlier snowmelt, prolonged allergy seasons, and extended agricultural growing seasons.
Key insights
- Between 1970 and 2023, average spring temperatures increased in 229 of the 239 analyzed U.S. locations (96%), with an average warming of 2.2°F across those cities. Over half of the locations (54%) saw spring temperatures rise by 2°F or more.
- The Southwest region experienced the highest average spring warming at 3.3°F. Specific cities with the highest warming include Reno, Nevada (6.8°F), El Paso, Texas (6.3°F), Las Vegas, Nevada (6.2°F), Tucson, Arizona (6°F), and Phoenix, Arizona (5.3°F).
- There has been a significant increase in the frequency of warmer-than-normal spring days (relative to the 1991-2020 normal). Since 1970, 96% of analyzed locations saw an increase, and 73% now experience at least seven more such days. The highest average increase was in the Southwest with 18 additional days.
- Spring warming has several environmental and health consequences: it causes earlier snowmelt that stresses water resources and hydropower in the West; extends the duration of seasonal allergies by delaying the first frost; expands the season for disease-carrying pests like mosquitoes; and shifts agricultural planting zones and growing seasons.
