Green Bond Fact Sheet

This fact sheet details a EUR 700 million green bond issued by Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) on July 5, 2019, to finance the procurement of energy-efficient passenger and freight trains for the Italian rail network.

• Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) issued a EUR 700 million (USD 788 million) green bond on July 5, 2019, with a maturity date of July 9, 2026. This issuance represents the first Certified Climate Bond issued in Italy and the second national rail network in Europe to issue such bonds.
• The bond proceeds are allocated to a loan for Trenitalia to procure new passenger and freight trains. Passenger train models include the Pop and Rock regional trains, which are up to 30% more energy efficient than the stock they replace, and the ETR 1000 long-distance trains, which emit 20.5% less CO2 than the ETR 500 models. Freight procurement includes the E494 TRAXX trains.
• FS, a state-owned company managing Italy's national rail infrastructure, is one of the country's largest electricity consumers. In 2017, its network consumption was estimated to be equivalent to the consumption of the Italian province of Umbria or 1.3 million average UK detached houses.
• The bond saw strong investor demand, with total orders of approximately 2.5 billion euro from 156 investors, exceeding the offer by 3.5 times. Approximately 65% of investors were from abroad, primarily from France (36%), Germany/Austria (8%), and UK/Ireland (7%), with 47% of orders coming from SRI investors.
