B.19 Offers Opportunity for Green Climate Fund to Promote Human Rights in Climate Projects - Center for International Environmental Law

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) and other civil society groups are urging the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to adopt permanent environmental and social policies during its nineteenth meeting (B.19) to ensure human rights and environmental protections in its climate projects.

• The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved and started funding 54 projects without having adopted permanent policies or safeguards to protect the environment, human rights, or local community engagement.
• CIEL and other civil society organizations are calling for the immediate approval of three specific proposed policies at the B.19 meeting: the Environmental and Social Policy (ESP), the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Policy and Action Plan, and the Indigenous Peoples Policy (IPP).
• Urgent pending matters for the GCF include the budget and work plan for the Independent Redress Mechanism (IRM), which allows people harmed by GCF projects to seek remedy, as well as the staffing and budgeting required to implement the proposed policies.
