SOUTH AFRICA’S PARTICIPATION IN THE JUST ENERGY TRANSITION PARTNERSHIP (“JETP”): SUPPORT FOR THE TASK TEAM AND REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ON ITS WORK

A letter from the Life after Coal Campaign (LAC) and the Fair Finance Coalition South Africa (FFCSA) to the South African government requesting transparency and civil society involvement in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and the work of the Presidential Climate Finance Task Team.

• The Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) is a collaboration between South Africa and the governments of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union to support a transition to a low-carbon economy. The partnership committed to an initial mobilization of $8.5 billion over a period of three to five years.
• The Life after Coal Campaign and Fair Finance Coalition South Africa are requesting clarity on the Presidential Climate Finance Task Team's commitment to transparency and the extent to which civil society and community organizations will be consulted in the negotiation process.
• The coalitions highlight a funding gap, noting that while the Political Declaration mentions $8.5 billion, Eskom's Just Energy Transaction is estimated to require between $30 billion and $35 billion over 15 years.
• The coalitions propose that climate finance should be conditional on the retirement of coal power stations and should not fund new fossil fuels, including coal, gas, or nuclear energy. They specifically mention opposing Eskom's proposed R85 billion 3000MW gas plant.
• The coalitions argue that the finance deal should cover the rehabilitation of coal mining areas and infrastructure, the development of publicly and community-owned renewable energy, and the implementation of energy efficiency policies.
