SOUTH AFRICAS PARTICIPATION IN THE JUST ENERGY TRANSITION PARTNERSHIP (JETP): SUPPORT FOR THE TASK TEAM AND REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ON ITS WORK

The Life after Coal Campaign (LAC) and the Fair Finance Coalition South Africa (FFCSA) have written to the South African Presidency and relevant ministers to seek clarity on the Presidential Climate Finance Task Team's operations and the structure of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). The coalitions request transparency in negotiations, the inclusion of civil society in consultations, and a commitment that the initial $8.5 billion in funding—and any subsequent finance—is not used for new fossil fuel projects, including gas and nuclear power. They further argue that finance should be conditional on the retirement of coal power stations and include funding for the rehabilitation of mining areas and the development of community-owned renewable energy.

• The Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), announced at COP26 on 2 November 2021, involves a commitment from the governments of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union to mobilise an initial $8.5 billion over three to five years to support South Africa's transition to a low-carbon economy.
