A letter from the South African Department of Environmental Affairs to Eskom regarding the application for postponement of compliance time-frames with the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act 39 of 2004 minimum emission standards for the Camden Power Station.

• The National Air Quality Officer determined that the Camden Power Station is currently operating in compliance with minimum emission standards for both existing and new plants regarding Particulate Matter (PM), meaning no decision on postponement was required for that pollutant.
• Postponement of compliance with minimum emission standards for new plants regarding Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) is granted from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2025, with a limit of 3500mg/Nm3, based on the sulphur content of the fuel.
• Postponement of compliance with minimum emission standards for existing plants regarding Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) is granted from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2020, with a limit of 1300mg/Nm3.
• The Camden Power Station is scheduled for decommissioning in 2020 based on its 50-year life span.
• Eskom is required to implement an offset programme to reduce PM pollution in the ambient/receiving environment, with a definite implementation plan due by 31 March 2016.
