Climate Knowledge Brokers Group Workshop Report 23–24 June 2015 UN City, Copenhagen, Denmark

This report documents the 2015 Climate Knowledge Brokers (CKB) Group workshop held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The event focused on road-testing a new CKB Manifesto, analyzing diverse user needs for climate information, and discussing the future of the network's collaborative efforts to create a 'Climate Knowledge Grid'.

• The primary objective of the 2015 workshop was to 'road-test the new CKB Manifesto', which serves to explain the importance of the climate knowledge brokering role to donors, users, and potential members. The feedback received ranged from 'high-level strategic advice' to suggestions regarding the use of 'more active language' and the suitability of the term 'Manifesto' itself.
• The workshop identified five distinct categories of climate information users based on their specific problems: 'Unaware users', 'Ignored users', 'Users without access', 'Users without time', and 'Overwhelmed users with too much information'. This typology aims to move beyond broad labels like 'policy-makers' to better understand whether users are proactive or reactive, and whether their needs are general or specific.
• The CKB draft Manifesto is underpinned by six principles focusing on understanding user needs, championing the broker role, adopting appropriate working methods, committing to collective learning, applying open knowledge standards, and utilizing digital technologies. Participants suggested strengthening the language of these principles, replacing verbs like 'believe' or 'recognise' with more assertive terms such as 'We know' or 'We address'.
• Knowledge Sharing Clinics provided a peer-assist format for brokers to solve practical challenges. Examples included Practical Action's effort to create a 'Flood Solutions Catalogue' and the UNFCCC's goal to share 'technology needs assessment (TNA) reports' from developing countries via the TT:CLEAR portal to attract donors.
• To improve future collaboration, the group proposed creating 'nodes' (thematic or regional working groups) to carry forward specific ideas between workshops. A high priority was placed on establishing an M&E (monitoring and evaluation) node to help individual members 'demonstrate the impact of their work' and prove the value of knowledge brokering.
• The network aims to expand its reach by moving workshops out of Europe to regions such as North America, Africa, and Asia to diversify membership. This may involve 'piggyback[ing] on existing networks and conferences' to secure high-level buy-in and reduce travel costs for participants from further afield.
• Technological goals for the 'Climate Knowledge Grid' include mapping existing platforms to avoid duplication, creating an 'ask an expert' button accessible across all CKB websites, and developing an overarching analytics tool to provide quantitative evidence of the benefits of participating in the network.
