COUNTRY SNAPSHOT

This fact sheet describes the activities of the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) in Bangladesh, focusing on technical assistance for climate-compatible development, research on climate-induced displacement, and leadership in the global 'loss and damage' agenda.

• Bangladesh is taking a leading role within the Least Developed Country (LDC) group regarding the emerging global issue of 'loss and damage'. CDKN supports this by increasing the expert pool, developing technical understanding, and producing case studies, such as one released at the Doha COP18 to bring ground realities to negotiating circles.
• The 'Adaptation Policy Options' project, implemented by the University of Sussex and the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), is researching climate change-induced displacement. Initial qualitative data indicates that the average duration of seasonal migration has increased from six months to nine months due to decreased work availability caused by climate events.
• Field research on displacement is being conducted across five districts: Munshiganj (river bank erosion and floods), Chapai Nawabganj (droughts), and Satkhira (cyclones) as areas of origin, and Dhaka and Khulna as destination areas.
• The Action Research on Community Adaptation in Bangladesh (ARCAB) is a long-term action-research programme engaging twenty communities across major natural and urban ecosystems. It utilizes a Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for Community Based Adaptation (M+E4CBA) that is shifting from a top-down donor perspective toward a bottom-up approach of community empowerment.
• The South Asia Climate Change Award (SACCA) Fellowships, supported by CDKN and Panos South Asia, aim to improve climate change coverage and public awareness by enhancing the capacity of journalists and editors in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
